Middleweight champ Joppy in fair condition after accident CHEVERLY, Maryland (Ticker) -- WBA middleweight champion William Joppy has been upgraded to fair condition at Prince George's Hospital one day after he was involved in a car accident outside the gym where he trains.
A hospital spokeswoman said that Joppy suffered a fractured vertebrae in his back, and cuts and lacerations on his head. He did not sustain any neurological damage and was able to speak and had movement throughout his body.
Joppy's van was broadsided by a car outside the gym Monday afternoon in Capital Heights.
The 28-year-old Joppy (26-1-1, 20 KOs) was scheduled to defend his title against No. 1 contender Darren Obah of Australia on February 6 at the Washington Convention Center. He was to officially announce the fight in a news conference today.
